Adopting the Common Core State Standards will require instructional shifts. This course is designed to prepare administrators to support their staff through this transition and ensure high-quality implementation. Participants will explore the standards by identifying how they align to current state standards and where they differ. Implications for instruction and assessment will be identified. Research-based models will be provided to facilitate the change process throughout the transition to Common Core State Standards, as well as tools to monitor teachers’ use of best practices to effectively teach the new standards. Participants will create an action plan to support staff during the transition to Common Core State Standards. This course is available for a K–12, K–6, or 7–12 audience.

This overview will also introduce the College and Career Readiness Standards and areas where the standards may differ from previous state standards. Lessons will be explored to demonstrate lesson design and instructional strategies that best address a blend of Content Standards with College and Career Readiness Standards. Examples of effective assessments will also be provided as well as a self-assessment tool to support teachers’ effective implementation. This course is available for a K–12, K–6, or 7–12 audience.

What comes first the assessment or the instruction? This is the time-honored question that the Common Core State Standards will address. The Next Generation of Assessments will require educators to examine the complex relationship between teaching, learning and assessment. To demonstrate learning students will be engaged in multidisciplinary, real world tasks. This process will strengthen the relationship of teaching, learning and assessment. Ultimately this will improve student achievement and ensure college and career readiness. During this one day course teachers and administrators will focus on the why, what and how of the Next Generation Assessments. This course is available for a K–12, K–6, or 7–12 audience.

To teach them effectively, educators must make shifts in how they instruct and assess. This session will analyze each College and Career Readiness Standard and provide teachers strategies to effectively incorporate these standards into daily teaching of the content standards. Lessons will be modeled and participants will plan their own lessons with collaborative support. Assessment will also be addressed. This course is available for a K–6, or 7–12 audience.

College and Career Readiness will require students to be able to communicate in a variety of ways. The process of communication integrates the standards of Reading, Writing, Listening & Speaking, and Language. In order to do this effectively students will need to spend a significant amount of time writing. Write Source 2012 supports the teaching and learning necessary to achieve the goals of the Common Core Standards for English Language Arts. Participants will focus on the implications for instruction particularly how to address CC.K–12.W.R.6, using technology to produce and publish writing and to interact and collaborate with others. This interactive one-day workshop will explore how Write Source 2012 will support the Common Core Standards for Literacy.

The Standards for Mathematical Practice will require educators to develop a variety of student expertise to prepare them for life in the 21st Century. The integration of process standards developed by NCTM and the strands for Mathematical Proficiency determined by the National Research Council report Adding It Up are integrated in the Standards of Mathematical Practice in the Common Core. To teach and develop these standards teachers must make shifts in how they teach and assess. This session will analyze each Standard of Mathematical Practice and provide teachers strategies to effectively incorporate these standards into successful teaching, learning and assessment. Lessons will be modeled and participants will plan their own lessons with collaborative support.
