Living in a Global Society

Our social studies courses provide educators with tools to help students understand their roles in both the local and global communities. Programs include guides for integrating technology into the classroom, incorporating primary source materials—digital, print, and multimedia—into instruction, and addressing Common Core Standards in the curriculum.

ExpandCivics in Action

Civics in Action explores the purpose, principles, structure, and challenges of government as well as the rights and responsibilities of individuals and nations. Topics range from framing and amending the Constitution to current affairs of sovereignty. Participants will experience several differentiated strategies for active student engagement and resources that can be incorporated into the curriculum towards civic literacy and citizenship development. This course does not outline scope and sequence of a course but rather provides avenues of engagement with the content.

Objectives:

  • Understand the rational and methodological considerations in designing a civics course of rigor and relevance
  • Incorporate active engagement activities that have been research-validated as effective practices for civic literacy, document analysis, writing, substantive conversation, and inquiry-based learning
  • Identify current issues in light of past American and world history to foster local and global citizenship development and skills for the 21st century
  • Acquire a resource list of print and electronic materials and lesson plans
