Watch a video

Irene Fountas is a Professor in the School of Education at Lesley University in Cambridge, MA. She spends her time helping new and experienced teachers grow in the art of meaningful whole- and small-group instruction and meeting children at their level of need. Along with her co-author, Gay Su Pinnell, she has developed the country's most-used standard on leveling text for small-group instruction. They have also authored many books including Guided Reading, Teaching for Comprehending and Fluency and When Readers Struggle. When Irene is not writing professional development for classroom teachers and coaches, she is guiding every leveled text at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

Her influence on the quality of leveled materials and the instructional support that accompanies them simply can not be measured.

Despite Irene's busy teaching and speaking schedule, she is dedicated to continuing her work with children who have difficulty learning to read. When in Cambridge she can often be found with one of the many children she tutors regularly.
